The Department of Engineering of the University of Palermo (UNIPA) promotes and coordinates research and teaching activities in all the engineering sectors, with a strong multi-disciplinary approach. The department includes two units working on ICT: i) the electronics, telecommunication and mathematics section, with research activities on the synthesis and analysis of devices and circuits in the fields of power electronics, hyper-frequency (i.e., microwaves and millimeter waves) and Tera-hertz range and Optics, and experimental characterisation and protocol design for wireless networks; ii) the computer engineering section, with research activities in the filed of artificial intelligence, data analysis and cybersecurity. Both the units cooperate in the ICT PhD Program organised at UNIPA. Regarding the human resource recruitment and training, UNIPA has recently renewed the prestigious HR Excellence in Research certificate by the European Commission.

UNIPA facilities include a telecommunication laboratory part of a national research infrastructure on beyond-5g systems (called SoBigData), workstations, shared high-performance simulation servers, a semi-anechoic room, IT services and infrastructure support, software-defined-radio platforms for implementing LTE/5G base stations, IoT devices, software licenses (e.g., MATLAB), as well as full access to relevant online resources such as the IEEE digital libraries.
